MTD

Making Tax Digital (MTD) is a UK government initiative requiring businesses and landlords to keep digital records and submit VAT and income tax returns using compatible software. The regime was introduced by HMRC in phases, with MTD for VAT applying to most VAT-registered businesses from 2019, and MTD for Income Tax Self Assessment affecting sole traders and landlords with annual business or property income above £50,000 from April 2026. Updates to MTD requirements, deadlines, and exemptions are published by HMRC through official guidance on gov.uk and legislation.gov.uk. Watchdog HQ monitors changes to MTD weekly.
